Ultragenyx is looking for an experienced Sr. Azure Cloud Engineer II to bring our transformation to the cloud. As a Senior Azure Cloud Engineer, you will be responsible for designing, implementing, and managing scalable, resilient, and secure Azure environments to support our organization’s applications and workloads. This role requires in-depth expertise in Azure infrastructure, Microsoft systems engineering, and SRE principles for automation and efficiency. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience with Microsoft technologies, strong skills in automation, and a proven ability to work effectively with Managed Service Providers (MSPs) to leverage their resources for successful project delivery.
Work Model:
Flex: This role will typically require onsite work 2-3 days each week, or more depending on business needs. In many locations, the business will set certain days each week that Flex employees are required to be onsite.
Responsibilities:
- Will lead architecture, deployment, and maintain scalable, secure, cost efficient and highly available Azure environments, leveraging IaaS, PaaS, and other cloud services to meet the needs of various business applications. Engineer and implement cloud-based solutions in a global environment.
- Will use in-depth knowledge of Microsoft systems to manage and optimize Active Directory (Entra ID), Windows Server, and other core Microsoft technologies. Lead incident response efforts for critical incidents, ensuring timely resolution and thorough root cause analysis (RCA).
- Will develop and maintain automated scripts, tools, and processes using technologies such as PowerShell, Azure CLI, and ARM templates, with a focus on enhancing cloud infrastructure efficiency and reliability.
- Leverage prior experience working in environments with high MSP reliance to effectively manage vendor resources, ensure alignment with internal goals, and deliver projects efficiently through strategic MSP partnerships.
- Oversee and manage Systems related projects from inception to delivery, applying basic project management methodologies to ensure timely, budget conscious, and quality project outcomes.
- Establish robust monitoring, logging, and alerting for Azure environments and troubleshoot any issues related to cloud infrastructure and application performance. Perform proactive monitoring, cost management, capacity planning, and performance tuning to optimize platform reliability and cost. Develop and refine incident management processes to minimize downtime and impact on services.
- Implement and maintain security best practices, ensuring compliance with industry standards and company policies for cloud environments and Microsoft infrastructure.
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Information Technology, or a related field or equivalent work experience. Azure certifications (such as Azure Administrator, Azure Solutions Architect) and MCSE (Microsoft Certified Solutions Expert) are highly desired. 10 years of overall experience, with exposure and hands-on involvement in the following key domains.
- Proficiency with Active Directory (Entra ID) and Windows Server administration, including configuration, user management, and domain policies. A strong knowledge of core Microsoft technologies, including DNS, DHCP, and Group Policy management Linux as well as experience in Windows OS system administration
- Deep understanding of Azure services, networking, security, storage, compute, and identity services and ability to design and deploy Azure environments using best practices for scalability, security, and reliability.
- Proven track record of working in environments with heavy reliance on MSPs, including resource coordination, task assignment, and managing deliverables through third-party vendors. As well as the ability to troubleshoot incidents, identify root cause, fix and document problems, and implement preventive measures where needed.
- Proficiency in automation and scripting with Terraform, Python, PowerShell, Azure CLI, and ARM/Bicep templates.
- Familiarity with Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools such as Terraform, and experience in implementing CI/CD pipelines for cloud deployments.
- Experience managing projects independently, using basic project management methodologies to prioritize tasks, manage timelines, and deliver results.
- Capable of analyzing complex technical issues, quickly identifying solutions, and implementing effective fixes.
- Hands-on experience with virtualization platforms (such as HyperV or VMware).
- Experience in migrating from virtual machines (VMs) to containerized environments
- Familiarity with SRE principles, monitoring tools (e.g., Azure Monitor, Application Insights), and automated alerting for proactive management of cloud resources.#LI-CK1 #LI-Hybrid

This range reflects the characteristics of the job, such as required skills and qualifications and is based on the office location noted in this job posting. The range may also be adjusted based on applicant's geographic location.
This position is eligible for annual bonus and equity incentives. Actual individual pay is determined by demonstrated experience and internal equity alignment.
