Job Description

The Traffic Engineering (TE) division of Public Works is seeking a motivated, detail-oriented Engineering Technician I to support our Traffic Management Center, with traffic engineering tasks in office and field settings.

This position provides technical assistance to the Traffic Engineering & Operations section of Public Works by performing para-professional work for the City's Traffic Management Center (TMC) on a range of traffic engineering assignments. The ideal candidate is technically qualified, enjoys problem-solving, and demonstrates strong communication and customer service skills.


Typical tasks may include:
  • Assists with the daily operation of the City's Traffic Management Center (TMC) and Advanced Traffic Management Systems (ATMS), including traffic signal software, dynamic message signs (DMS), closed-circuit television (CCTV) traffic monitoring cameras, school zone cameras, wireless communication systems, and vehicle detection systems.

  • Monitors and maintains logs of real-time traffic conditions for internal adjustments and to provide information on delays for public dissemination.

  • Receives, investigates, and responds to customer complaints about traffic signal operations by troubleshooting signal issues from the Traffic Management Center and notifying repair personnel as needed.

  • Assists in preparing technical reports, memoranda, and presentations for internal use, public meetings, and reviews by the City Council or committees.

  • Assists with analysis of traffic data and crash reports to support safety evaluations and operational studies.

  • Sets up, operates, and maintains traffic data collection equipment such as counters and radar units, and associated software.
