Job Purpose

National Grid is looking for an Electric Trader for New England who will perform renewables and electric trading and portfolio analysis in order to meet the service needs of the customer and financial and business objectives of National Grid. In this role you will contribute to the planning, contracting and procurement process for supply of electricity, environmental attributes, and emission allowances for several National Grid's electric companies. You will ensure supply meets the Company's goal of providing reliable and cost effective service while obtaining full cost recovery on a current basis.

Key Accountabilities

  • Manage existing power purchase agreements (PPAs) with large renewable projects including offshore wind.
  • Maintain the relationship with the counterparties, including interpretation and application of established contractual agreements to ensure adherence to standards and best outcomes for National Grid. Manage the delivery of energy and lead discussions regarding settlement resolutions.
  • Implement and manage PPAs with small generators (Qualifying Facilities or QFs) that sell generation to National Grid.
  • Manage the transition of QFs to the Solar Massachusetts Renewable Target (SMART) Program. This includes transferring Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) to QFs and forecasting future REC deliveries from the SMART portfolio.
  • Assist in the development of hedging and procurement strategies for emissions allowances to comply with the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative on behalf of National Grid's Long Island generation fleet.
  • Support regulatory filings related to electric and renewable trading to ensure full cost recovery.
  • Work collaboratively and develop relationships with key stakeholders, both internal and external (for example: state agencies, settlement and meter teams) in order to fully explain and support the implementation of National Grid policies and processes.
  • Independently collate and analyze electric supply portfolio data using pre-determined tools, methods and formats in order to support the department's planning and volatility management process.
  • Monitor and/or assess working practices to ensure they are compliant with legislation and governance.
  • Ensure all energy planning and procurement activities comply with corporate and industry standards for risk management.
  • Test and challenge existing scheduling and trading procedures and highlight areas for improvement in order to ensure they are robust.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant analytical field such as Finance, Engineering, Business Administration, Economics, Mathematics, Accounting, or Computer Science prefered.
  • At least 3 years of professional experience, ideally within the utility sector or wholesale electricity markets.
  • Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Excel and strong skills in Microsoft Office applications.
  • Proven ability to communicate complex concepts effectively, both in writing and verbally.
  • Strong attention to detail; experience with contract negotiation processes is a plus.
  • Familiarity with project management principles and methodologies.
  • Demonstrated creativity and innovation in business approaches.
  • Knowledge of wholesale energy markets, independent system operator market, and state and federal legislation preferred.
  • High standards of personal integrity, reliability, and commitment.
  • Ability to cultivate and maintain productive relationships with suppliers and regulatory bodies.
  • Demonstrates the ability to network internally and externally and to develop successful, long lasting business relationships with others and seeks to understand and challenge business scenarios to the benefit of all parties.

Salary

$116,000 - $137,000 a year
