Summary:
The Staff Pharmacist is a member of the health care team whose specific knowledge and professional skills are directed toward the appropriate and effective use of medication in the treatment of the patients’ medical problems. The Staff Pharmacist reviews medication orders for appropriateness, dispenses medications, and maintains required documentation. In addition, the Staff Pharmacist will consult with and provide drug information to other members of the hospital to ensure the correct use of medications.
Responsibilities:
1. Reviews and verifies drug orders for appropriateness. Consults with the prescriber if drug therapy appears inappropriate.
2. Prepares and dispenses all drugs, including refills, for patient use as ordered and as appropriate. Assesses drug therapy for appropriateness prior to medications being dispensed.
3. Strictly complies with all laws, rules and regulations of the North Carolina Board of Pharmacy governing the dispensation and documentation of drugs dispensed. Adheres to pharmacy policies and procedures relative to drug procurement, processing, preparation, admixture, dispensation, disposition and documentation.
4. Adheres to the departmental policies and procedures related to controlled substances (i.e., accurate dispensing and documentation of controlled substances). Strictly complies with all federal, North Carolina and the North Carolina Board of Pharmacy laws, rules and regulations governing controlled substances dispensation and documentation.
5. Provides and documents drug consults as required.
6. Supervises technicians and checks their work for accuracy and completeness.
7. Collects and/or reviews data for quality assurance activities.
8. Maintains and improves pharmaceutical and clinical expertise for self and teammates.
9. Operates and/or demonstrates competency in the operations of the following pharmacy automation systems: Pyxis, Logistics, CII Safe, and other medication safety related automation technologies in accordance with established policies and procedures.
10. Proficient in aseptic technique and admixes IVs/chemotherapy drugs as appropriate and in accordance with USP Chapter <797> and <800> standards.
11. Performs pharmacokinetic dosing/monitoring and other prescriber generated clinical or drug specific dosing consults as required and as appropriate.
12. Inspects final products prepared by pharmacy technicians. Responsible for providing supervision, assistance, work assignment and instructions to the pharmacy technicians.
13. Promotes teamwork and cooperation with teammates to meet the pharmaceutical needs of the patients.
14. Promotes and adheres to the established behavioral expectations of the department.
15. Is available and flexible to work varied schedules as required to ensure coverage for the area.

Education
B.S. or Pharm. D. degree from an accredited college/university of pharmacy required.
Licensure/Certification
Licensed to practice pharmacy in North Carolina or eligible for licensure. May accept a board eligible graduate for up to 120 days prior to licensure.
Experience
One year experience as a hospital pharmacist preferred.

• Exhibits knowledge and a basic understanding regarding the age specific needs of neonatal, adolescent, pediatric and geriatric patients.

• Ability to read, write and communicate effectively in English.
• Proficient with MS Office applications, pharmacy software, and able to learn new software rapidly.
• Ability to tolerate latex products and exposure to hazardous drugs.
• Ability to stand or walk on uncarpeted floors for duration of shift.
Valid NC Driver’s License: No
If driving a Wayne UNC Vehicle, must be 21 years old and MVR must be approved by Risk Management.
