Mercedes-Benz Research and Development North America is seeking a manager to oversee the day-to-day operations of the Emissions Testing Laboratory located in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The ideal candidate will have experience in the principles of leadership, management, and strategy. The manager will prioritize leading a team of emissions technicians and engineers toward success while ensuring that the fulfillment of customer requests is done with efficiency and service. 


Relocation assistance (domestic or international) is not provided for this position.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Develop engineering staff and laboratory technicians to build a motivated and strategically focused testing team. Foster a cooperative, proactive environment rooted in honesty, respect, and integrity, while ensuring adherence to all company policies and procedures.
  • Development of an employee-oriented company culture that emphasizes quality, continuous improvement, key employee retention and development, and high performance.
  • Coach, mentor and develop staff, including overseeing new employee onboarding and providing career development planning opportunities.
  • Provide effective performance management and feedback to employees.
  • Collaborate with internal and external clients (e.g. Powertrain, durability, Certification, etc.) and work to communize processes where possible between internal labs.
  • Ensure optimal utilization of the Ann Arbor laboratory by coordinating efforts to ensure proper maintenance of building and support equipment, timely ordering of supplies, scheduling of tests, and staffing of personnel.
  • Contribute technical insight and expertise, as it relates to testing methodologies for fuel economy or emissions, to ensure that the Mercedes-Benz brand is properly represented during the regulatory rulemaking process.
  • Ensure compliance of all OSHA, state, and local regulations pertaining to the laboratory's facility and employees, including contract and temporary staff, by assessing and minimizing any risks which may endanger the personal safety of employees and or contractors.
  • Maintain current and establish new KPIs to monitor operational trends and expenses to ensure cost effective operations.
  • Serve as the primary liaison between Mercedes-Benz Research & Development North America and Mercedes-Benz AG, ensuring the accurate provision of emissions and fuel economy test data in compliance with state and federal regulations. This role is vital for addressing the specific needs of Mercedes-Benz by maintaining the Ann Arbor Technical Center lab as the internal expert for all items related to US emissions, fuel economy, and efficiency measurement processes.
  • Ensure process reliability and compliance with Mercedes-Benz Research & Development North America's testing procedures by overseeing the calibration and maintenance of exhaust and Sealed Housing Evaporative Procedure (SHED) analytical equipment. This role is crucial for maintaining process control, reliability, and data generation capabilities for Mercedes-Benz vehicles.
  • Utilize best practices to investigate and embrace new technologies, generate cost savings, and enhance standardized testing practices and processes.
  • Minimal domestic and international travel is required (1-2 weeks per year).

Minimum Qualifications:

  • B.S. degree in engineering or equivalent experience, along with prior automotive testing experience is required. Preferred: Mechanical, Electrical, Automotive.
  • 10+ years of relevant work experience.
  • Expert knowledge of emission testing procedures, technology, and Automotive Government Code of Federal Regulations.
  • An in-depth knowledge of Mercedes-Benz EVAP and Emission systems and their corresponding effect on test results.
  • Understanding of US certification timelines.
  • Ability to understand and compensate for the diverse work and ethnic cultures of respective personnel.
  • Understanding of process flow and improvement knowledge to ensure cost effective operation of the laboratory facility.
  • An understanding of controlling practices, conduct trend analysis and implement process improvements, improve efficiencies and generate cost savings.
  • Apply best practice testing methodologies to identify, resolve, and optimize test and calibration processes.
  • Knowledge of local and state safety regulations such as and not limited to: OSHA, ISO 9001:2015, etc.  
  • Proficient and effective communication both written and oral.
  • Ability to maintain a focused and motivated team through coaching, teambuilding, interpersonal skills and personnel development.
  • Experienced in Microsoft Office.
  • Physical requirements of this position: Frequent use of speech, vision, hearing, use of hands for computer use and presentations. Frequent sitting, standing and reaching with hands.
  • F2 License.
  • Valid US driver's license.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with US emissions, fuel economy, and BEV/PHEV testing.
  • Familiarity with powertrain development methodologies, project plans, etc.
  • Understanding of US emissions, fuel economy, and OBD certification processes / timelines.
  • Project management experience.
  • Experience managing both exempt and non-exempt employees.
