Job Summary:

The Direct Support Professional  assists individuals with developmental, cognitive, and/or physical disabilities with daily living activities, both at home and in the community. Daily living supports include general housekeeping, meal preparation, transportation, assistance with personal cares, basic healthcare-related tasks, and administration of medications.

Essential Duties:

  • Perform housekeeping duties, such as cleaning or laundry
  • Perform bedside or personal care, such as personal hygiene assistance or physical transfer
  • Perform basic healthcare-related tasks, such as blood sugar level-testing, monitoring of vital signs, catheter care, pressure sore care, or administration of first aid
  • Document participant condition, services performed, and other participant-related information
  • Report changes in participant condition to the Program Director
  • Administer medications to participants, documenting the medication administration
  • Prepare nutritious, well-balanced meals for participants
  • Provide transportation for participants to doctor appointments, outings, or community events
  • Advise participants on matters such as hygiene, finances, or nutrition
  • Adhere to participants’ individual support plans, behavioral intervention plans, and protocols, and assist participants in achieving their goals
  • Complete other duties at the request of the Program Director

  • Psychology ~ Knowledge of human behavior and performance; individual differences in ability, personality, and interests; learning and motivation; assessment and treatment of behavioral and affective disorders
  • Public Safety and Security ~ knowledge of relevant equipment and strategies to promote effective security operations for protection of people
  • English Language ~ knowledge of the structure and content of the English language, including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar
  • Transportation ~ knowledge of the principles and methods for transporting people

  • Communication ~ ability to communicate effectively, in both oral and written form

Minimum Qualifications:

Direct Support Professionals must be at least 18 years of age. A high school diploma or GED certificate is required. Some education, training, and/or experience in providing community supports to individuals with disabilities, or in a related human service field, is preferred. A valid driver license, personal automobile insurance, and a clean driving record preferred, which allow the Direct Support Professional to be covered by ILC, LLC.

Working Conditions:

  • Requires working up to 40 hours per week
  • Requires working every other weekend
  • May require working some holidays
  • May require working some asleep or awake overnight shifts
  • Requires working mostly indoors in a home setting
  • Requires some driving and/or working outdoors for short periods
  • Requires working with one to four participants at a time
  • Requires working primarily alone
  • May involve exposure to communicable disease or violent or aggressive behavior

Physical Requirements:

Approximate physical position requirements:

  • Sitting ~ 20% of time
  • Standing ~ 40% of time
  • Walking ~ 40% of time
  • Lying down ~ 0% of time (excluding sleep time during asleep overnight shifts)

Approximate frequency of physical requirements:

Continuous:

  • Balancing ~ maintaining balance to prevent falling while performing body movements, including when working with uncontrolled, intermittent movements, or another person

Frequent:

  • Bending/stooping ~ bending the body downward and forward by bending the spine at the waist
  • Carrying/lifting ~ raising, lowering, or transporting an object or person from one level to another using hands, arms, and shoulders. Except in event of emergency the assistance of another staff member is used when moving a person
  • Climbing stairs and ramps, ladders, step stools
  • Crouching ~ bending the body downward and forward by bending the legs and spine
  • Reaching ~ extending the hands and arms in any direction, including above the shoulder level
  • Pushing/pulling ~ exerting force to move an object away or towards the body
  • For driving positions ~ operating foot controls

Occasional:

  • Kneeling
  • Squatting ~ bending the body downward by bending the legs with the spine straight
