With guidance from the WERS Brand Manager and General Manager, the On-Air Host/Programming Assistant executes a daily music-focused show that serves the Boston music community and grows ratings. They create and coordinate music, on-air content, and the messaging that promotes it. The On-Air Host/Programming Assistant also plays a vital role in station student recruitment and training efforts. All work performed by the On-Air Host/Programming Assistant will strive to increase audience engagement, ratings, and revenue.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES

  • Daily responsibilities include on-air hosting, music scheduling, writing liners and station imaging, production, and social/blog posting.
  • Use music scheduling software to generate playlists for various programs. This includes reconciling each day’s broadcast to ensure music rotates throughout the dayparts.
  • Maintain the WERS music library for assigned dayparts and programs; monitor trends for the formats we broadcast and add new music.
  • Ensure the audio files use the correct naming convention and are trimmed for smooth segues and avoidance of dead air.
  • Collaborate with programming, membership, and underwriting to create content and partnerships that align with station formats and audience expectations.
  • With direction and suggested structure from the Brand Manager, GM, and programming consultant, implement regular and special features that encourage increased use and sponsorship opportunities for underwriting.
  • Attend weekly music meetings and participate in choosing new and library music in collaboration with the Brand Manager and Programming Consultant.
  • Maintain and develop relationships with record labels, artist management, and promoters to book local and national artists and bands to perform live in Studio 88-9 and procure listener experiences with artists.
  • Act as the liaison between all departments by creating and distributing weekly programming updates, creating and maintaining a messaging calendar to track the flight dates and spins for all terrestrial and digital programming content, including ticket giveaways and contests.
  • Interact with listeners by hosting station events at area venues and/or client or partner locations.
  • Connect with listeners and members who require assistance or information about programming or other station branding.
  • Write copy for live on-air reads and manage the live copy system.
  • With guidance from the Brand Manager, schedule student and professional hosts for on-air shows and assign fill-in hosts as needed.
  • Assist Brand and Operations Managers as a contact for third-party content creators who contact the station for performances or music consideration. These include bands, promoters, managers, and various theater groups.
  • Work with the Brand Manager and GM to ideate, plan, and execute external and on-campus concert events, including talent procurement, facilitation, production teams, and on-site audience and client workflow.
  • Assist the Operations Manager with recruitment efforts (open house events, Org Fair, Departmental Fair, physical and social media posting, interviews, and auditions) every semester, establishing a team of 50+ student employees and volunteers.
  • Create and maintain a student and volunteer staff list to serve as the non-tuition credit roster.
  • As part of the Operations Manager’s initial training, reinforce students on the proper use of station equipment and software so they can execute the station’s format, whether live or pre-recorded.

QUALIFICATIONS – Qualifications are deemed required or preferred and represent what is needed to perform the job effectively.

  • A bachelor’s degree or 3-5 years of equivalent experience in media from a broadcast organization is required.
  • A minimum of 5 years of on-air experience at a professional broadcast radio station is required.
  • Triple A (Adult Album Alternative) format experience preferred.
  • Major market on-air radio experience preferred.
  • Experience with RCS music scheduling software (G Selector).
  • Experience maintaining an on-air staff and schedule.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES – This may be representative but not all-inclusive of the knowledge, skills, and abilities commonly associated with the job.

  • Knowledge of the FCC laws and regulations that govern non-commercial broadcasting and contesting preferred.
  • Knowledge of the leading social media platforms preferred.
  • Knowledge and appreciation of the music and artists in the Triple A (Adult Album Alternative) format.
  • Working knowledge of Enco automation software.
  • Working knowledge of Adobe Audition and Pro-Tools.
  • Strong on-air, imaging, advertising, and web copywriting skills.
  • Understanding and knowledge of the Triple A (Adult Album Alternative) format music charts and artist roster.
  • Possess established relationships with key record labels, music distribution companies, and artist management.
  • Working knowledge of G Suite and Microsoft Office preferred.
  • Strong organizational skills.

Compensation: $62,600.00 - $76,700.00 annually, commensurate with experience.

Division: Division of Information Technology

This position will be exclusively represented by the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), Local 888 for purposes of wages, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.
