SUMMARY
Under general supervision provides direct clinical and clerical support to medical and surgical specialty clinicians (and other procedural based departments). Provides medical assistant support to physicians or advanced practice clinicians for both office visits as well as in operative and surgical procedures. Is technically proficient in all aspects of equipment and instruments related to GYN procedures. Performs tasks such as assisting in room preparation and turnover, maintenance of a sterile environment, and assisting the clinicians with minor operative and surgical procedures. May operate specialized equipment. Also performs general medical assistant support for pre and post procedural office visits including advanced level support tasks.
EDUCATION/LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS
High School diploma or equivalency certificate (e.g. GED, HiSET, TASC Test) from an accredited institution or governmental unit or a Medical Assistant Certification required. Associate's degree in medical assisting or graduate of medical assistant certification program preferred.
A bachelor’s or other non-clinical degree combined with an interest in healthcare and excellent problem-solving, multi-tasking, technology-literate skill sets can at times be substituted for medical assistant certification or work experience.
American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) strongly preferred. Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) may be required based on specialty.
EXPERIENCE
Experience typically acquired through three years in a clinical setting with at least one as a Medical Assistant. Computer experience required with the ability to use word processing and spreadsheet programs. Electronic medical record (EMR) experience and/or aptitude to master the EMR based on other technology experience required.
SKILLS
Able to communicate in a professional and appropriate manner. Demonstrates high level of skill in cleaning, maintenance and usage of specialized equipment relevant to the department and position. Knowledge of sharps and biohazard materials. Proficient in setting up a sterile field. Understands how to assist with department specific procedures such as FNA (Fine Needle Aspirations). Able to work with lab specimens. Knowledge of operating autoclave asserts and what to do if the assert fails. Exceptional patient service awareness and skills. Ability to provide a high level of customer service a must.
