Positions will be located in Forest Park, GA (Metro-Atlanta)

WORK LOCATION, SCHEDULE, & TRAVEL

  • Positions will be based out of Forest Park, GA (Metro Atlanta), however candidates living outside of the area may be considered with the expectation that they could successfully telework and be willing to travel to work and/or field location on a routine (to be determined) and as-needed basis.
  • Hybrid work schedule (both in-office and telecommute); currently three (3) days in-office and two (2) days telecommute (subject to adjustment).
  • Relocation assistance may be provided if the successful candidate does not currently live within a reasonable commute distance.
  • This position will require some travel (approximately 25%) and the ability to work successfully in a remote/virtual environment with access to internet service.

JOB SUMMARY

These positions are responsible for providing project scoping, estimating, and conceptual design services in support of the Operating Company’s substation control projects. These positions will be responsible for supporting the Operating Company’s planning and budgeting processes by providing complete and accurate estimates of material, labor, and total costs associated with substation control projects. The successful Substation Control Lead Estimator candidates will provide guidance, oversight, and quality assurance reviews for Southern Company-approved contractors and PDPS Estimators as they develop cost estimates for our customers. The positions will require field visits and may involve occasional overnight travel.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

Specific to both positions, the primary job responsibilities include:

  • Create a safe work environment through personal commitment to safety.
  • Apply substation control engineering expertise to accurately scope projects and to provide quality cost and duration estimates in a timely fashion.
  • Develop detailed project scopes and conceptual design packages to produce accurate cost estimates and project schedules as the basis for detailed design activities. 
  • Provide timely and accurate cost estimates to customers including Project Management, Transmission Planning, and Transmission Maintenance Support to facilitate budget development and management.
  • Serve as the substation control engineering representative on related project meetings (scoping, status updates, preliminary outage coordination, solution team, site selection committees etc.) and prepare conceptual designs as required to support the process.
  • Provide input on the development and refinement of substation control engineering estimating units used in the estimating system (TEAMS) to ensure accurate estimates of equipment, material, labor duration, and total costs.
  • Provide input on the development and refinement of control estimating practices, guidelines, and training.
  • Apply substation control engineering expertise to support and/or perform QA/QC of peer or contract vendor deliverables.
  • Participate in and support Southern Company Transmission activities and initiatives.
  • Serve as a damage assessment team member after major storms after receiving the company-provided training.

Specific to the Substation Control Lead Estimator, additional responsibilities include: 

  • Provide guidance, oversight, and technical assistance/expertise on design/standards/tools to external engineering firms.
  • Provide Quality Assurance reviews on cost estimates and conceptual design packages.
  • Participate in regular PDPS Control scheduling and Greaseboard meetings.
  • Provide evaluations / feedback on engineering firms performance.
  • Participate and lead in PDPS training in support of new processes, procedures and design standards.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS (Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills)

Education:

  • BS Engineering or Engineering Technology degree is preferred.
  • BS Engineering or Engineering Technology degree in Electrical, Mechanical or Civil Engineering is preferred.
  • Two-year degree from a technical school/university or significant related work experience will be considered in lieu of BS degree.
  • Professional Engineering (P.E.) license is a plus.

Experience:

  • Prior experience in transmission or distribution planning, design, construction, operations, or maintenance is preferred.
  • Experience in substation control design is strongly preferred.
  • Prior experience in project development and cost estimating is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • General Knowledge of substation control, design, construction, operation and maintenance.
  • Working knowledge of operating company processes, procedures and tools used in the development of transmission substation projects.
  • Working knowledge of the SCS Transmission Engineering design standards, processes, procedures, and tools (AutoCAD Electrical, Vault and TEAMS) used to scope, estimate, and design substation control projects. 
  • Detailed knowledge of local, state, and federal regulations governing the design and construction of substation control projects.
  • Detailed knowledge of substation control cost estimating.
  • Detailed knowledge of substation construction methods, equipment, techniques, and associated costs.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office products and transmission software applications currently in use to estimate and design substation projects.
  • Time management and organizational skills sufficient to manage multiple projects with various priorities and competing deadlines.
  • Exhibits strong problem solving, oral and written communication skills, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to establish and maintain peer and customer relations across organizational lines. 
  • Proven ability to build consensus and achieve results through effective use of persuasive communication and formal presentation skills.
