Position Summary

Reporting to the Manager of Sustainability, this position is responsible for coordinating engagement programs that advance the Metropolitan Airports Commission (MAC) sustainability goals, with a strong focus on the 2030 employee sustainability engagement goal and tenant engagement required for the Airports Carbon Accreditation Program. As a new position at the MAC, the role presents an exciting opportunity to help develop and implement initiatives that foster sustainability for the MAC and its stakeholders.

This position is part of the Sustainability Department which is responsible for the development, implementation, monitoring and measurement of a comprehensive sustainability program that integrates and aligns sustainability with the MAC.
 
The Sustainability Department is part of the Strategy and Stakeholder Engagement Division. The division's charter is to function as an in-house team serving as stewards of strategy, developing strategic communications and creating stakeholder champions to ensure the organization delivers on its purpose, values and strategic goals.
 
The position will require strong interpersonal, communication and project management skills to be successful in the complex and unique airport ecosystem. The position will collaborate closely with numerous MAC departments, tenants, consultants and community partners to engage in sustainability solutions and action.

Position Description

  • Develop, launch and manage an ongoing tenant sustainability engagement program, which will include components such as recognition programs, consistent communication and training. Regularly evaluate and implement identified program improvements to ensure success.
  • Lead MAC employee sustainability engagement through efforts such as coordinating an employee sustainability
  • team, planning engagement events, collaborating with departments to functionally integrate sustainability across the organization, providing sustainability training to staff, developing internal communications and responding to requests for information.
  • Collect, analyze and manage data as assigned. Use Microsoft Excel and other software to visualize, organize and maintain data.
  • Lead assigned priority sustainability initiatives. Examples of responsibilities include facilitating meetings; engaging and collaborating with other MAC employees, consultants, partners and stakeholders; gaining consensus and approvals for decisions; organizing logistics; developing education and outreach; and conducting research.
  • Lead assigned activities associated with MAC's three sustainability working groups: the Emissions Working Group, Water Working Group and Waste Working Group. Activities may include facilitation, planning agendas, presenting content, preparing meeting materials, organizing speakers and conducting research.
  • Engage the broader community of MAC stakeholdersthrough presentations, surveys, tabling at events, leading airport tours and responding to requests for information.
  • Represent the MAC as needed at stakeholder meetings and with industry working groups. This includes developing content for internal and external audiences and a focus on relationship-building to advance partnerships.
  • Provide research, writing and data as needed to support grants and strategic partnership initiatives led by functions outside of the Sustainability Department.
  • Participate as needed in MAC's monthly Executive Sustainability Committee.
  • Support the Sustainability Department as needed with logistical and clerical office support, such as contact management, meeting and event support/planning, invoicing and purchasing.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
  • One of the following:
    • Two or more years of experience working within organizations or with communities to improve participation and engagement around sustainability goals and initiatives AND a bachelor's degree or higher in the field of sustainability or other related fields such as environmental/climate science, anthropology/psychology/sociology, communications/marketing, or planning/policy
    • OR Four or more years of experience working within organizations or with communities to improve participation and engagement around sustainability goals and initiatives AND an associate degree or equivalent
    • OR - 6 or more years of experience working within organizations or with communities to improve participation and engagement around sustainability goals and initiatives.
  • Ability to work with different levels of people in an organization, work with many different teams and businesses of different types
  • Exceptional relationship building and interpersonal skills
  • Close attention to details and accuracy, excellent organizational and project management skills, demonstrated problem-solving abilities, and capacity to multi-task and prioritize
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills in English with the ability to adapt to a diversity of styles and perspectives
  • Advanced skills with common computer applications, including Microsoft Excel, Outlook, Word and PowerPoint
  • A commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion, and the ability to apply principles to project work
  • A valid driver's license
  • Ability to work occasionally on weekends and in the evenings

DESIRABLE REQUIREMENTS
  • Training or expertise in community-based social marketing, behavioral science and systems thinking
  • Experience developing and maintaining engagement databases for tracking and organizing
  • Nuanced understanding and experience creating cross-cultural and culturally sensitive programs and events
