The Pretreatment & Environmental Technician will work for Mizkan America, Inc. at the Owensboro, Kentucky (Ragu) sauce plant. The plant is a high speed processing and packaging facility which produces sauces for both the Ragu and Bertolli pasta sauce brands. This position reports to the EHS Manager. This job description reflects assignment of essential functions. It does not prescribe or restrict the tasks that may be assigned.
Overall Responsibility:
Under direction of the plant EHS Manager, the Pretreatment & Environmental Technician provides hands-on support for multiple aspects of the plant's wastewater pretreatment and environmental activities. These duties include but are not limited to system operations, in-house sampling, inspections, SOP and PM creation, training and other administrative duties as required. Additionally, this position is expected to lead specific company initiatives to aid the EHS Manager in creating an environmentally compliance company. The Pretreatment & Environmental Technician assumes responsibility for the successful completion of EHS assignments to ensure the plant’s adherence to all applicable, federal, state, and local regulations.
Daily and as Required:
• Lead specific company initiatives around areas such as Spill Prevention, outdoor housekeeping or others as defined by the EHS Manager
• Assists EHS Manager with writing and/or editing of site and company-wide programs
• Coordinates and conducts EHS inspections and/or audits, performs analysis, documents findings, performs risk assessments and reports on corrective actions related to environmental compliance
• Assists in presentation, documentation and tracking of compliance and company specific EHS training.
• Develops plant and company specific EHS training.
• Work with plant maintenance to implement (or improve) PM program for pretreatment
• Edit existing and create SOPs as needed
• Maintain housekeeping of pretreatment area
• Order and maintain inventory for all chemicals and supplies used in pretreatment
• Create in-house sampling program
• Complete in-house sampling and conduct any needed lab analysis
• Work with chemical provider and local resources to determine appropriate chemical usage
• Record operational data including but not limited to flows, gauge/meter readings, pit levels, etc
• Maintain, repair, and lubricate equipment, using hand tools and power tools
• Coordinate any hauling of material or cleanout/cleanup efforts needed
• Complete monthly Storm water inspection; discussing monthly results with department Manager after each inspection, filing results when complete
• Maintain understanding of wastewater permit and ensure all required tasks are completed, including inspections of facility drains to ensure that strainers stay in place
• Ensure that best management practices are implemented and needed training is completed
• Work with sampling company to schedule permit required samples and maintain data
• Interface with RWRA on any regulatory needs
• Must be able to recognize a system upset and be able to implement initial steps for correction
• Develop and or lead training related to the pretreatment system, stormwater, and spill prevention
• All other duties as assigned.
Qualifications/Requirements:
• Competence in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Power-point.)
• Able to communicate externally/internally with suppliers, company leaders and stakeholders in an effective manner.
• Experience in wastewater pretreatment is required
• Working knowledge of HMI or other related controls of pretreatment system, or, the ability to learn
• Working knowledge of lab equipment relative to pretreatment or obtain the ability to learn
• Basic Environmental Training – Certificate course or ability to obtain
• Must be willing to work multiple shifts and weekends
• Must be willing to travel up to 20%
• Experience in permit and report writing for environmental, chemical and local waste water requirements is preferred.
