Summary

This position is located in the Obstetrics and Gynecology (OB/GYN) at the Phoenix Indian Medical Center (PIMC) in Phoenix, AZ. The incumbent is responsible for the departmental organization, planning, implementation, and evaluation. Provides comprehensive general OB/GYN care for female inpatients and outpatients from childbearing age to elderly.

Supervisory and Managerial Responsibilities (40%)

  • Provides direct and indirect supervision to health care professionals such as Physicians (OB/GYN). Evaluates subordinate employees and/or supervisors and acts as reviewing official for evaluations of departmental employees. Makes selections of subordinate employees and recommends approval of departmental employee selections in filling vacancies. Resolves disciplinary problems not settled at a lower level. Hears and counsels complaints and grievances and renders decisions when required. Acts as liaison for disciplinary cases requiring serious action at an administrative level. Active participant in service line leadership activities and division coverage. Works collaboratively with other leaders in the department to coordinate communication and program initiatives. Confers with and makes recommendations to the service line leadership and hospital administration pertaining to hospital policy initiation of new therapies, or need for new equipment. Participates fully in medical staff program review, quality assurance, performance improvement, and committee meetings. Maintains medical staff credentialing files for all providers in the department. Assures quality care through regular review of provider care and documents review for the re-credentialing process.
Direct Patient Care (60%)
  • The incumbent provides comprehensive medical and surgical OB/GYN care within the limits of his/her delineated clinical privileges. Evaluates patients for medical and surgical conditions and establishes and implements an appropriate care plan. Provides emergency care as required. Evaluates inpatients daily and documents all appropriate findings in the medical record. Provides consultation for other providers as needed. Instructs and counsels patients and family members as required. Performs major and minor surgical procedures within the accepted national standards for morbidity and mortality. Surgical disease age range is from childbearing years to elderly. The incumbent is fully for all technical aspects of the operative procedure. Serves as consultant to other medical departments within PIMC and to referring providers from outlying hospitals and clinics. Conducts OB/GYN clinics at PIMC, and may be required to travel in small twin-engine planes or in ground vehicles to conduct clinics at field facilities. Performs minor OB/GYN procedures in the clinic setting. Provides consultation for providers during clinic visits at field hospitals when requested. Instructs and counsels patients and family members. Refers patients to appropriate specialty hospitals or physicians for services not available at PIMC.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

BASIC REQUIREMENT(S): All physicians must meet all three of the following basic requirements:

Degree: Doctor of Medicine, Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine or equivalent from a school in the United States or Canada. This degree must have been accredited by the Council on Medical Education of the American Medical Association; Association of American Medical Colleges; Liaison Committee on Medical Education; Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation of the American Osteopathic Association, or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.
  • Degree from Foreign Medical School: A Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree from a foreign medical school must provide education and medical knowledge equivalent to accredited schools in the United States. Evidence of equivalency to accredited schools in the United States is demonstrated by permanent certification by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates , a fifth pathway certificate for Americans who completed premedical education in the United States and graduate education in a foreign country, or successful completion of the U.S. Medical Licensing Examination.
Licensure: Must possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a Physician from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.

Graduate Training: Subsequent to obtaining a Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree, a candidate must have had at least 1 year of supervised experience providing direct service in a clinical setting, i.e., a 1-year internship or the first year of a residency program in a hospital or an institution accredited for such training. Graduate training programs include only those internship, residency, and fellowship programs that are approved by accrediting bodies recognized within the United States or Canada. Descriptions of such programs are described below.
  • An internship program involves broadly based clinical practice in which physicians acquire experience in treating a variety of medical problems under supervision (e.g., internal medicine, surgery, general practice, obstetrics-gynecology, and pediatrics). Such programs are in hospitals or other institutions accredited for internship training by a recognized body of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).
  • A residency program involves training in a specialized field of medicine in a hospital or an institution accredited for training in the specialty by a recognized body of the American Medical Association, (AMA) or Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).
  • A fellowship program involves advanced training (beyond residency training) in a given medical specialty in either a clinical or research setting in a hospital or an institution accredited in the United States for such training.
In addition, to the Basic Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Physicians must also meet the following requirements for the GS-15 grade level:
  • At least 5 years of graduate training in the specialty of the position to be filled or equivalent experience and training. Examples of specialized experience in providing direct supervision, plan work to be accomplished by subordinates, clinical oversights to medical staff, evaluating staff for professional practice and clinical/technical functions, directs activities of the department medical staff. Maintain administrative matters and responsible for direct patient care.
SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTOR: Incumbent must possess the following for the specialty:
  • Must possess and provide a copy of current Board Certification in the physician's specialty by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) or the American Osteopathic Association (AOA).
