Who will you be working with?

This position provides a unique opportunity to interact with team members across the engineering organization, developing our next generation drivetrain technologies and integrating those technologies onto various vintages of locomotives. This position will integrate closely with our Systems teams and our Controls/Software teams on multiple platforms from our next generation architecture to our proven systems that have had decades of service life. This role comes with the overall objective of improving design and requirements quality, increasing engineering productivity, all while addressing the latest customer needs.

How will you make a difference?

The Senior Engineer – Controls Subsystems will focus on the strategic development of the control system requirements for all-electric battery and hybrid locomotives and drive new control function development, validation, and New Product Introduction launch. The Senior Engineer will demonstrate leadership in coordinating business goals, programs, and processes for the Traction and Auxiliary control design team. In this role you will utilize your experience and expertise to solve problems, develop, and execute objectives for self and others, and can impact short-term and long-term business goals, set strategies, and drive priorities.

What do we want to know about you?

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering

  • At least 15 years of experience in an engineering control design position with hands-on design, development, and implementation of closed loop controls and/or diagnostics

  • Demonstrated ownership of sub-system design and controls integration through full-development life-cycle concept to field application

  • Experience with DOORS or similar requirements definition methods/tools

  • Willing/able to support hands-on execution of simulation and on-locomotive testing & validation

  • Ability and willingness to travel as required

What will your typical day look like?

  • Direct/own control system design and development for locomotive Traction & Auxiliary features including new control function definition, requirements derivation, dynamic analysis, failure modes analysis, design trade-offs, implementation, and validation

  • Direct/lead the integration of control system with component hardware (propulsion batteries, DC/AC inverters, AC/AC convertors, motors, alternators, rectifiers) and other sub-systems (propulsion battery, diesel engine, engine cooling, engine control, compressed air, ventilation) to meet performance, application, and platform functional requirements

  • Direct/lead subsystem validation utilizing integrated model/software testing using virtual simulators, integrated model/software/electronics hardware testing using full operability HITL (hardware in the loop) simulators, locomotive validation testing, customer acceptance testing, and field in-service testing

  • Direct/lead the investigation, root-cause identification, and resolution of control system reliability issues

  • Define development strategies and lead the execution of high visibility large scale programs and New Product Introduction developments

  • Lead controls subsystem collaboration with systems engineering, program management, commercial teams, simulation, software, model development and hardware teams in the application of advanced controls techniques/methods/tools to meet emerging requirements

  • Direct/lead the evaluation and conceptualization of new control technology, applications, and platforms as part of New Product Introductions

  • Lead/execute the design, analysis, or evaluation of assigned projects using sound engineering principles and adhering to business standards, practices, procedures, and product/program requirements

  • Provide technical leadership to personnel supporting the assigned project and engage with other functional groups to maintain efficient project execution

  • Document technical data generated by the assigned project consistent with engineering policies and procedures

  • Provide timely communications on technical and program risk to the respective stakeholders and leadership

  • Participate/lead on teams assigned to address organizational initiatives and generic issues

  • Participate/lead as a presenter or reviewer in technical and program reviews
