Job Summary

Position: Security Specialist, GS 12

Division: Los Angeles Field Office

Location: Los Angeles, CA

Working Hours: 8:15 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. (hours may vary on office needs)

Salary: GS 12 $101,121.00-$131,452.00

Full Performance level: GS 12

Key Requirements

Physical Demands

The work is usually accomplished while the employee is comfortably seated at a desk or table. Some walking and standing may occur during a normal workday and/or in connection with travel or attendance at meetings and conferences away from the work site.

Physical security inspections are conducted, as needed, which may require accessing areas or facilities under construction. A degree of standing, walking, bending, and stooping is required during inspection of a facility. Use of ladders and lifting of moderately heavy materials may also be required. Frequent travel to meetings and FBI field locations will be required.

Work Environment

The work is primarily performed in an office-like setting, which is adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated. Physical Security inspections, when necessary, are conducted which may create exposure to inclement weather.

Major Duties 

  • Performs duties related primarily to Personnel and Physical Security matters. May be required to complete assignments related to any security function for which the Chief Security Officer (CSO) has responsibility, to include areas such as Personnel Security, Physical Security, Communication Security (COMSEC), Continuity of Operations (COOP), Occupant Emergency Program (OEP), Industrial, and Information Security.
  • Supports the administration of the FBI Security Program by participating in the direction of complex security assessment investigations. Determines trust for granting, continuing, and/or revoking security clearance access.
  • Works in conjunction with the ACSO and/or the CSO during audits and inspections of Sensitive Compartmented Information Facilities (SCIF), areas designated as secure areas for processing and storage of SCI and classified material, and of the office, as needed.
  • Identifies the methods used for protection, handling/safeguarding, and destruction of national security and sensitive information. Assists the CSO with ensuring compliance with current policy and directives as it relates to Information Assurance protection.
  • Provides leadership, guidance, and training to junior security specialists on roles and responsibilities as well as local procedures and proper methods to mark, handle, store and courier classified information.
  • Develops and implements training materials, standard operating procedures, and checklists.
  • May serve as the OEP Coordinator, participate in a Facility Security Committee (FSC), or may serve as an Associate CSO within an office led by a CSO.

Specialized Experience (SE):

GS 12: Applicants must have one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS 11 grade level.

  • Performed security and administration work in two or more functional security areas- Personnel Security, Physical Security, COOP, OEP, Information Security, COMSEC, and Industrial Security.
  • Processed and reviewed records of information regarding background/security-related investigations. 
  • Provided leadership through development and implementation of training and standard operating procedures.
  • Participated in audits and inspections of secure areas and made recommendations to management on policy and procedure changes to improve security.
  • Prepared and presented written reports to brief management on a variety of security assessment investigations.

Education

GS 12: Education may not be substituted for specialized experience at this grade level.
