Job Description:
The Resident Director (RD) is responsible for the residential life functions in one or more residence halls, housing up to 450 students. Through supervision of up to 12 Resident Assistants, the RD fosters a safe, positive and inclusive community environment that encourages students to develop personally and through their musicianship. This position includes educational, supervisory and administrative functions that promote student engagement, academic success, personal development and a strong sense of community through the implementation of the Residential Curriculum.The RD is a full-time, twelve-month, live-in professional position that reports to the Associate Director of Residential Education. Please note in the below description that the responsibilities for summer are significantly different from that of fall and spring.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Staff Supervision and Training of Resident Assistant Staff
Provide orientation, training, supervision and regular evaluation of between 3-12 Resident Assistants.
Participate in the selection of Resident Assistants.
Conduct weekly meetings with Resident Assistants to develop and review goals/outcomes achieved, discuss issues, recognize contributions, provide and solicit feedback.
Assess skills and development of Resident Assistants while providing experiences, opportunities and training to support their development.
Attend all departmental and divisional training sessions and workshops, as required. This may include planning and facilitating training sessions for the hall and department as a whole.
Residential Education
Promote the holistic development of students as a partner in the academic mission of the institution.
Assist in the continuing development of the Residential Curriculum, including creation of learning goals, learning outcomes, educational strategies, assessment measures and quarterly reports.
Train Resident Assistants on Residential Curriculum and assist in the development of educational strategies.
Support Resident Assistants in the design, execution and assessment of educational strategies.
Living Learning Communities
Assist in the continuing development of the Living Learning Communities, including creation of educational plans, design and execution of educational strategies.
Manage the advertisement and recruitment of residents.
Facilitate collaboration between LLC Resident Assistants and Student Academic Mentors
Collaborate with LLC faculty members and campus partners to plan co-curricular activities.
Assist in conducting assessments of the LLCs, including survey administration and focus groups.
Hall Council Advising
Serve as the advisor to the Hall Council in the assigned community.
Attend and assist with Hall Council executive and general meetings.
Manage Hall Council budget.
Approve, track and report all Hall Council funding requests.
Crisis Intervention
Serve on the Primary-On-Call rotation, providing 24/7 coverage during each week-long shift.
While on call, maintain a ten-minute response time for the entire campus.
Follow protocol when responding to incidents.
Provide appropriate follow up to incidents.
Serve as the college representative during non-business hours.
Respond to incidents that involve any Berklee student and/or guests.
Facility Management
Conduct weekly building walk-throughs and report facility/safety concerns.
Manage room condition reports.
Submit work orders in a timely manner.
Work with Physical Plant/Facilities staff to resolve maintenance issues and incidents of vandalism and routine maintenance improvements.
Inspect rooms at the beginning, during and at the end of each semester and bill for damages when residents move out.
Provide insight and reports on future building needs.
Work collaboratively with the Residential and Housing Operations team
Student Conduct
Hear cases for the entire student population as assigned by the Director of Community Standards and Conflict Resolution.
Participate in regular meetings to discuss cases.
Adjudicate and sanction students in violation of any policies.
Maintain timely and accurate judicial records.
Departmental and Divisional Involvement
Attend and participate in all professional staff training.
Fulfill professional staff recruitment responsibilities including but not limited to interviewing and hosting candidates during on-campus interviews.
Collaborate with other departmental and university offices such as Public Safety, Counseling Center, Campus Life, and the Center for Diversity Equity & Inclusion as needed.
Represent Housing and Residential Education and Student Affairs at on campus and off campus events.
Represent the department at various functions such as BRASS Day, Opening Day, recruitment events, etc.
Participate with other department staff in the development and review of department policies, procedures, goals and objectives.
Work with other department staff on processes and projects such as resident room selection, move-in and move-out and system wide programs.
Serve on Student Affairs division committees and represent department through collaborative programs and events.
SUMMER RESPONSIBILITIES
During the summer, Berklee hosts approximately 20 small programs and 1 large Five-week program. The primary population is minors ranging from 15-18 years of age, which results in specific training in working with minors. This also includes almost daily contact with parents.
Staff may be required to relocate to a different apartment during the summer months and/or for reassignment. Professional Staff will also need to prepare their hall for the upcoming academic year.
Knowledge and Skills Required
Master's Degree in Student Personnel, Counseling, Education or related field required.
One to three years of post-bachelor’s degree experience in college student supervision, residential life, judicial affairs, orientation, or student activities.
Excellent administrative, as well as written and oral communication skills are required.
Strong organizational and record keeping skills.
Creativity, self-motivation and ability to work in groups as well as independently strongly preferred.
Ability to manage projects, delegate tasks and provide excellent customer service required.

Each RD is eligible for a 2-year contract, depending upon performance, with an option for a third year.
RDs may be moved to a different building based upon need.
