Job Summary

The research laboratory of Dr. Anthony Rosenzweig in the Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Cardiovascular Medicine at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI is in search of a Research Technician Intermediate to help support the Rosenzweig Laboratory team. The laboratory is situated in the heart of Michigan Medicine at the North Campus Research Complex in a newly renovated laboratory building within steps of a multitude of research resources, easy access to collaborators, and animal facilities. The laboratory research focuses on cardiac physiology and disease, interested in understanding how exercise protects the heart against heart failure.

Responsibilities*

  • Animal handler- Assist postdoctoral fellows with the maintenance and care of mouse colonies for diet mice.
    • Perform animal training, testing, and harvest animal tissues. 
    • Oversee the running wheel cages and software.
  • Benchwork - preparing tissues in cassettes for histology, assist postdoctoral fellows perform experiments as needed
    • Assist lab members in carrying out standard experimental procedures. (cell culture, PCR, Western Blots)
    • Assist in establishment of primary cardiac myocyte cell cultures
  • Safety manager for the lab - attending BI safety meetings, performing monthly safety checks, disposing of hazardous waste, helping the lab function more sustainably, making safety tips to pin on the board, maintaining the chemical inventory.
  • General housekeeping for the lab - making sure the shelves are stocked with the commonly used items. Autoclaving water for the incubators, tubes, pipet tip boxes/filling them with new tips, sending glassware for cleaning/autoclaving. 
    • Placing, tracking and receiving orders when needed as backup for the laboratory manager

Required Qualifications*

  • High school diploma or Associate's degree and 1-3 years experience, preferable in cardiovascular research lab experience
  • The position requires a highly motivated individual with a strong work ethic who is very detailed oriented
  • Ability to function independently and as a team member is a team setting
  • Reasonable knowledge of methods used for the care of animals and laboratory practices
  • Some knowledge of animal research, colony management and breeding procedures and practices
  • Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with colleagues and the animal care facility team
  • Experience using Quartzy for order tracking, processing and supply management
  • Experience with laboratory SOPs and laboratory safety management best practices

Desired Qualifications*

  • Bachelor's degree in with specialization in animal science or a related field.

Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings.  Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
