Summary

This position is located in the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research (CBER), Office of Blood Research and Review (OBRR) which regulates blood products, related drugs, and devices; reviews retroviral diagnostic tests; develops policies on blood product standards; participates in inspections; and conducts research.

Duties

  • Serves as a Biological Researcher responsible for research experiments in support of the laboratory.
  • May lead a research team in the conception and formulation of product research ideas and approaches.
  • Advises on policy issues that are central to the mission of the agency in the area of Biology.
  • Utilizes Biological knowledge and experience to inform scientific and regulatory decisions regarding the safety and effectiveness of biological products.
  • Works on the day-to-day operation of the laboratory.
  • Plans, develops, and implements experiments and protocols under study.
  • Collects data and scientific information to support research, decisions, regulatory programs and policies.
  • Maintains and prepares scientific information.

Qualifications

The position of Research Biological Scientist falls under the 0401 occupational series. To qualify for this position at grade GS-12/13, you must meet all requirements by 11:59 pm EST on 11/25/2024.

Basic Requirements
  1. Degree: biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position.

    or

  2. Combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

Minimum Qualifications:
Specialized experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. The specialized experience must demonstrate one year of full-time work experience , or the equivalent if part-time (for example, an employee working 20 hours per week for a 12-month period should be credited with 6 months of experience.) Experience may have been obtained in either the federal service or its equivalent with state or local government, the private sector, or nongovernmental organizations.

Specialized experience for GS-12: In order to qualify for the GS-12, applicants must have one (1) year of specialized experience, equivalent to the GS-11 in the Federal service to include: 1) Conducts research related to the development, manufacture, and testing of new and old biological products, AND 2) Gathers existing data to assist determines project technical needs AND 3) Participates on the work with others on laboratory procedures and equipment.

Specialized experience for GS-13: In order to qualify for the GS-13, applicants must have one (1) year of specialized experience, equivalent to the GS-12 in the Federal service to include: 1) Plans and conducts research related to the development, manufacture, and testing of new and old biological products, AND 2) Reviews existing data and determines project technical needs AND 3) Oversees the work of others on laboratory procedures and equipment.
