Southern Nuclear Operating Company's corporate Nuclear Fuel and Analysis Department, PWR Fuel Engineering, provides support and performance in the fuel and reactor engineering functional area for the PWR Southern Nuclear Fleet. We are seeking an individual capable of driving and executing strategic initiatives in nuclear core physics, advanced fuel mechanical design, and innovation in the fuel and reactor engineering functional area. The position is located at the SNC Corporate Office in Birmingham, AL, and will require up to approximately 25% travel.
This position will be responsible for performing activities related to nuclear fuel and core design, core management, operational support, reload safety analysis, reload licensing, and technical evaluations regarding nuclear fuel vendor fabrication and design capabilities for current and advanced fuel products. This position is also responsible for spent fuel characterization and certification for long term dry storage. Work performed in this position supports four operating PWR units and two under construction. This position may be required to support the fleet Emergency Response Organization. This requires personnel to live within one hour of the SNC ERO facility for emergency response availability.JOB REQUIREMENTS:
Education Requirements:
- A minimum of a Bachelor of Arts or Science degree in Engineering or Physics from an ABET accredited institution is required.
- An advanced degree in Engineering, Physics, or related field with specialties in nuclear fuel analysis is desired.
- A degree(s) in Nuclear Engineering is preferred.
- Professional Engineer license/certification or advanced degree is highly preferred.
Experience Requirements:
- Knowledge of nuclear fuel and nuclear fuel thermal-hydraulic engineering analyses.
- Demonstrated knowledge of complex nuclear fuel design and core design analysis codes.
- Knowledge of nuclear fuel related FSAR and Technical Specifications and site procedures to perform fuel related operation support.
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience with Westinghouse codes and methods, such as NEXUS/ANC9, VIPRE-W, BOA, BEACON, etc.
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience with Studsvik codes is desired.
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience with loading pattern development is desired.
- A minimum of four (4) years of experience performing engineering calculations to support nuclear fuel analyses is required.
- Knowledge of PWR reactor physics and of fuel and core design analysis.
- Knowledge of PWR transient or safety analysis is desired.
- Excellent written and oral communications skills.
- Ability to comprehend complex reactor physics/design problems and provide solutions.
- Ability to use good judgment to make sound engineering and business decisions.
- Ability to exhibit an exceptional degree of technical expertise, creativity, and resourcefulness.
- Demonstrated proficiency in autonomous use of engineering judgement and decision making. Self-starter capable of performing tasks with little supervision or oversight.
PWR Fuel Senior Engineer responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Conduct independent analysis to support performance of PWR fuel or core design activities with minimal direction.
- Provide oversight of nuclear fuel supplier fuel and core design analysis and licensing support.
- Provide technical support for operational and commercial decisions for PWR units.
- Provide technical mentoring for fellow PWR fuel engineering team members.
