Job Summary

The Medical Director of Supply Chain will provide statewide leadership and clinical guidance as part of the UMH supply chain sourcing process.  In effort to support high quality and safe patient care, this role will provide clinical expertise and input into new product evaluations, conversions, contracting and utilization decisions.   This role will develop relationships and collaborate with team members across Value Analysis, Sourcing and Contracting and Procurement functions.  This role will also serve as a supply chain representative and physician advisor in the field, especially related to medical devices with physician preferences.  It is anticipated that this role will require 6-8 hours dedicated per week.

Responsibilities*

  • Support the overall enterprise supply chain management plan in alignment with the UMH strategic goals by overseeing and monitoring assigned projects
    • Physician Preference Item standardization projects
    • Driving cost-effective, high quality health care using physician-specific data analytics that supports patient-centered strategy for supply chain
    • Physician education for supply chain/clinical quality value analysis
    • Enforcement of system vendor utilization
  • Serve as the co-chair for the UMH Supply Chain Steering Council provide clinical input and support of initiatives to enterprise executive leadership.
  • Serve as the physician advocate for supply chain initiatives
  • Engage in crucial conversations with physician and clinical staff, using business analytics and benchmarks, to develop strategies for managing non-labor expenses.  Strategies may include standardization or consolidation of vendors/supplies, utilization optimization or process improvements.
  • Provide guidance on the efficacy and clinical equivalency of competing products and impacts to patient care. 
  • Provides input into negotiations of financial agreements (e.g.; contracts, purchases, services) that have an impact on the clinical practice.
  • Responsible for financial stewardship by utilizing Evidence Based Medicine methods, achieve standardization in the testing and selection of equipment, products, services and the development of clinical protocols.
  • Responsible for working with Risk Management on medical issues that may arise.
  • Increases clinical cost accountability
  • Champion and facilitate change and engagement
  • Address and mitigate clinical concerns regarding product standardization or utilization optimization
  • Encourages physician input and participation
  • Lead local physician champions at UMH Sparrow and UMH West

Required Qualifications*

  • Active medical license required; board certified in their area of expertise.  Subspecialty and experience in high expense areas of cardiac or surgery preferred.
  • Established physician leader.
  • Healthcare business and financial acumen, ability to articulate data analysis and interpretation.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to build relationships; ability to influence and work outside of span of control.
  • Ability to appreciate and collaborate with a wide range of internal & external stakeholders from diverse cultural, professional, organizational, and functional backgrounds.

Modes of Work

Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings.  Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
