Position Overview
The Maintenance Lead Mechanical inspects, troubleshoots, renovates, repairs, and installs mechanical systems, apparatus, and mechanical components of industrial machinery and equipment regularly while following administrative procedures to ensure that the work is performed in a safe, efficient, and cost-effective manner. All the while, the lead oversees the development and application of the new hire training and other related training/onboarding programs. Consistent with CertainTeed Gypsum's Vision, Mission, Values, and Objectives, the Maintenance Group Leader provides leadership to effectively lead and steer the maintenance team.
Essential Functions
- Ensures all associated maintenance activities are being performed safely and according to plant and corporate safety standards and policies.
- Leading by example is a must.
- Adheres to role and responsibility in CertainTeed's maintenance management system
- Installation, removal, and maintenance of new and existing equipment
- Review and perform work scope/tasks as per work order requirements
- Manage outside contractors as necessary
- Support WCM teams in the development of Professional Maintenance implementation and sustainability.
- Champion and drive the use of 5S in the maintenance area of responsibility
- Develop maintenance technicians to secure competencies, assess the performance, and flexibility of employees within the department, and initiate appropriate training, counseling, or corrective action to optimize the efficiency and effectiveness of the employee.
- Develops the training requirements for new hires and oversees the adherence to the defined training program.
- Assists with the development and structure of the testing requirements and applications to develop and understand the competencies of technicians.
- Performs and oversees troubleshooting in the field, retrieves needed parts and components, performs proper diagnosis, and notes all follow-up work or comments per site's process and procedures.
- Communicates regularly daily with Maintenance and Production Supervisors
- Confirm and enter actual hours worked, reliability information ( Object, Cause, Damage, Remedy, & comments), and required components used in SAP for work orders
- Assists with the creation of job plans, PMs, SOPs, and all other documentation-related tasks to improve the efficiency of the maintenance team
- Document work changes and communicate to the Maintenance Supervisor
- Works within the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS)/SAP and utilizes its functionality in daily maintenance activities.
- Responsible for testing new, modified, or repaired equipment before turning over to operations
- Responsible for following preventive maintenance procedures as assigned
- Responsible for proper use of mechanical and electrical instruments and hand tools to perform tests, analysis, and repair industrial equipment as required

Can fill in for the maintenance planner and supervisor. Therefore, one must be able to direct a workforce and oversee adherence to the daily work schedule for overall work execution.
Other Duties and Responsibilities
- Assist with root cause investigations to improve MTBF.
- Maintains various department records, files, reports, and equipment ledgers.
- Performs other related duties and responsibilities as needed and/or requested by management.
Required Qualifications
Work Experience
- 7 to 10 years experience in core craft mechanical
- 2 plus years experience in secondary craft electrical or electronic is preferred
- 2 plus years of leading, supervisory, or management experience is preferred
Required Skills and Abilities
- Works well with individuals within and outside the workgroup and has good oral and written communication skills to explain and interpret information, and ideas, or make recommendations daily.
- Capable of shop mathematics and reading and interpreting mechanical and electrical/wiring drawings and diagrams
- Knowledge of the physical properties of common metals such as strength in shear, tension, compression, and hardness
- Ability to operate and maintain mechanical and electrical diagnostic tools including but not limited to rules, calipers, and micrometers
- Knowledge of welding and what metals that can and cannot be welded
- Ability to set up and operate milling machines, boring machines, drill presses, grinders, lathes, etc to aid in the installation and repair of machinery and equipment
- Capable of installing and maintaining piping/insulation using standards and specifications necessary to supply air, water, steam, hydraulic, and other fluids
- Ability to layout, fabricate, and proper fastening of sheet metal parts as required
- Knowledge of industrial maintenance including but not limited to precision alignment, pneumatics, hydraulics, bearings, seals, fasteners, pumps, fans, mechanical drives, and mechanical fundamentals
- Knowledge of National Electric Code
- Ability to operate and maintain electrical diagnostic tools such as digital multi-meters, oscilloscopes, and PLCs
- Knowledge of DC & AC motors and controllers
- Capable of installing power wiring, conduit, and cables
- Ability to diagnose and control the action of electrical current by the use of switches, condensers, transformers, rheostats, and other electrical equipment
- Knowledge of electrical theory including but not limited to familiarity with the principles of electrical currents and voltages under a variety of conditions within the equipment or supporting devices at the site
