POSITION SUMMARY
The Parris Foundation is looking to fill the position of TRIO Upward Bound Program Advisor. The Program Adviser assists the TRIO Upward Bound Program Director in providing academic, career and postsecondary education advising and support to program participants who are low income & first generation and have an academic need. The primary objective is to prepare high school students academically for successful entry into college persistence and completion of a baccalaureate degree. This position requires a Bachelor's degree in Education, Psychology, Sociology, or related field and may involve occasional evening and weekend work. The position is 100% federal grant funded.

JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Identify, recruit, screen, and select prospective new participants to ensure the TRIO Upward Bound project meets is required enrollment goals each academic year.
  • Promote the program within the community and schools through public service announcements, flyers, and presentations, including regular visits to target schools to engage with students weekly.
  • Provide comprehensive academic, personal, career and financial aid counseling to each program participant.
  • Assess and document the academic and motivational needs of students selected for participation in program activities.
  • Assist in providing program awareness of the TRIO Upward Bound Program to stakeholders and school site partners, parents, and community member.
  • Conduct campus visits to meet with participants individually or in groups, providing academic advising and support related to successful school completion and postsecondary entry
  • Facilitate workshops on college applications, career opportunities, financial aid, FAFSA, financial planning, and the importance of rigorous academic coursework.
  • Assist participants with the college admissions process, including applying for financial aid and scholarships.
  • Coordinate and/or conduct age-appropriate academic support workshops and activities.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date student records and databases, documenting all relevant information on participant progress and project outcomes.
  • Monitor and track the progress of participants toward their academic performance, educational goals, maintaining confidentiality of all participant and staff information.
  • Gather and disseminate information on post-secondary entrance requirements, availability of financial aid, and other college preparatory information to prepare Upward Bound participants to successfully transition to college.
  • Plan and implement cultural enrichment activities for Upward Bound Summer Academy.
  • Plan, Coordinate, and chaperone for student field trips to colleges/universities, career exploration, STEM, and cultural enrichment.
  • Orient new and continuing participants to TRiO Upward Bound program requirements and encourage full participation in program offerings.
  • Develop and foster student interpersonal skills, abilities, and behaviors, such as positive academic behaviors, self-confidence & self-efficacy, long range academic & career goal setting, leadership, school and community involvement, retention, persistence, and completion.
  • Engage in collaborative efforts with other Upward Bound programs and Federal TRIO Programs to seek internal and external resources to augment program services.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Program Director.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Education: Bachelor's Degree in education, counseling, or related field from an accredited college or university.
  • Minimum of one to two years of professional experience working in a federal, TRIO, or similar program serving disadvantaged youth.
  • Experience providing case management and advising students about the college admissions and financial aid application processes.
  • Professional or personal experiences overcoming barriers like those confronting program participants.
  • Bilingual (Preferred)

WORK CONDITION/SCHEDULE

  • Primary Work Location: Works in a climate-controlled office/school environment
  • Requires reliable transportation for daily travel to target school sites
  • Physical Demands: Work is normally performed in a typical interior work environment, which does not subject the employee to any unpleasant elements
  • Work environment involves minimal exposure to physical risks
  • Position does require some heavy lifting
  • Primary Schedule Monday-Friday 8:00am-5:00pm
  • Some scheduled evenings and/or weekends are required
