Job Purpose

This position will assist both the Materials Acceptance and Failure Analysis Lab, and the Gas Quality Lab in their daily function. Key focus areas of this position will be to maintain and update testing protocols, develop new testing protocols, perform FTIR analysis, and design components for 3D-printer.

Additional areas that this position will be involved include component design for special projects and initiating operational efficiencies.

Key Accountabilities

  • Manage the portfolio of testing protocols and ensure that they are compliant with applicable codes and ASTMs.
  • Develop new testing protocols as required to account for new technologies to approve them for use at National Grid.
  • Manage the FTIR equipment and develop a database of elements encountered throughout the normal course of business to identify materials and contaminants that are discovered during failure analysis.
  • Design and produce products on the 3-dimensional printer for special projects and to assist lab technicians in completing their tasks.
  • Specify materials related to special projects and obtain sources of supply.
  • Participate in appropriate industry committees (AGA, PRCI, NYSEARCH, GTI/OTD, advisory panels), when necessary.
  • Develop best practices for teams to follow to ensure continuity across the team.
  • Assist in specifying new equipment when necessary.
  • Collaborate with analyst and technicians to promote a team environment.
  • A working knowledge of Gas Distribution, Gas Operations, LNG/CNG operation, and Customer Meter Services.
  • Participate in cross functional hubs for relevant processes (i.e. meetings with field ops, GMS, etc. to discuss systemic issues).
  • Develop a working knowledge or Gas Chromatographs.
  • Time split between Melville and Brooklyn approximately 80% Melville / 20% Greenpoint.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in an Engineering Program
  • Meet the qualifications of a Lead level position per the engineering progression guidelines. (10 years engineering equivalent experience or 8 year with a PE license).
  • Gas utility or energy industry experience required
  • Experience in Research & Development and pilot testing / field deployment of new technologies is a plus
  • Knowledge and understanding of regulatory issues affecting the industry
  • Understanding of industry codes & standards, and applicable design standards
  • Excellent administrative & organizational skills
  • Ability to build strong relationships with key stakeholders (both internal & external)
  • Strong skills in strategic thinking, problem solving, communication, project management, computer and analytical skills
  • Exhibits high personal standards for commitment to safety, integrity, and compliance
  • Exhibits intellectual curiosity & eagerness to seek out and learn about new technologies
  • Self-Starter with the ability to work independently with little direction
  • Ability to travel, when working outside our jurisdiction (DNY) is required.

Salary

$139,000- $164,000 a year
