WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW (Job Overview):

As a Medical Technologist, staff can expect to perform (in accordance with standard operating procedures and applicable regulatory requirements) basic and advanced donor and patient tests, and interpret results to determine donor-recipient compatibility.

WHERE YOUR CAREER IS A FORCE FOR GOOD (Key Responsibilities):

  • Resolving compatibility problems
  • Providing complex reference and consultation services to hospitals and transfusion services
  • Performing automated and manual test procedures on blood samples

Other Medical Technologist duties may include:

  • Managing receipt, coordination, shipment and transport of patient and donor blood samples and documenting supply and equipment problems
  • Managing reagent inventory (ordering, receiving, inspection and preparation)
  • Recognizing/resolving testing irregularities and assisting other Medical Technologists in problem resolution.
  • Consulting with staff at other medical facilities, to resolve complex serologic problems and providing special units to transfusion recipients.
  • Performing maintenance, repair and validation of laboratory equipment and software
  • Maintaining accurate records
  • Performing manufacturing duties associated with special blood products, if applicable.
  • Assuming lead responsibilities such as record review and training, assisting in concern management. – Tech III
  • Performing staff orientation and competency assessments, if applicable. Performing external customer education

• Standard Schedule: Day Shift

• Pay Information: $35-40/hr

WHAT YOU NEED TO SUCCEED (Minimum Qualifications):

  • MT(ASCP) or BB(ASCP) /equivalent, bachelor’s degree with major in biological science or chemistry plus 3 years blood banking experience, or MLT (ASCP) certification plus 5 years laboratory experience required.
  • MT (ASCP) and/or BB (ASCP) or equivalent desired. State license may be required where applicable.

Responsibilities

1. Provide direction to the laboratory staff including, but not limited to, hiring, training, coaching, evaluating and performance management to ensure a well-qualified team and to enhance operational success. Ensure staffing needs are met. Serve as a resource for managers and supervisors for complex technical issues.

2. In conjunction with the CLIA Medical Director, provide guidance to ensure appropriate patient care and staff training and safety.

3. Direct the planning process and ensure that long range goals are established for regional laboratory management staff and are aligned with regional, divisional and national initiatives. Oversee regional budget process for reagent, supply and equipment purchase approvals. Manage regional IRL billing process.

4. Ensure IRLs are engaged with Sales staff and participate in customer meetings. Represent the IRL to regional senior management and customers.

5. Ensure compliance with all state and federal regulations, AABB/ASHI standards, ARCBS directives and regional policies and procedures in all areas of responsibility, as well as initiate actions to foster a quality driven environment. Ensure laboratory training is completed in compliance with established guidelines.
Direct the non-conformance activities in the IRL. Coordinate the installation of new or revised tests and procedures, ensuring appropriate quality control in accordance with SOPs, CFR and OSHA regulations. Ensure compliance with state and federal regulations, AABB/ASHI standards, ARCBS directives and regional policies and procedures. Ensure laboratory training and competency is completed in compliance with established guidelines. May write, organize and maintain departmental procedure manual.

6. Ensure the IRL participation in the American Rare Donor Program and Diagnostics Manufacturing Division.

7. Responsible for the accuracy of computer and physical blood component inventories.

Qualifications

Education: Master’s degree or SBB (ASCP) certification/equivalent required. SBB (ASCP)equivalent required if the position functions as the CLIA IRL Technical Supervisor.

Experience: Minimum 7 years of directly related experience or equivalent combination of education and related experience required.

Management Experience: 5 years of management in an IRL or equivalent hospital setting Skills and Abilities.

Skills & Abilities: Effective communication and interpersonal skills required. Demonstrated proficiency in planning and overseeing analytical programs and activities. Ability to determine client and customer requirements and translate requirements into organizational plans, exercise sound judgement in complex situations with competing interests, apply financial acumen to all initiatives, and adapt to constantly changing situations with flexible and creative approaches. Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills. Proficiency in use of Personal Computer, word-processing, spreadsheet applications, and database applications when applicable. Ability to work on a team.

Travel: Up to 10% travel may be required.

May also include driving a vehicle and working under challenging conditions.
