Purpose We are currently seeking a part-time Instructional Support Specialist to support Strategy 533 for the Winter term (mid-December 2024 to May 31st 2025).  The online program will include both asynchronous (on-demand) course material and synchronous (classroom) sessions. This individual will support both the Faculty Lead of the course and students.

The ISS may also work in advance of the course offering to assist in the administrative tasks of course development:

  •  Proofreading copy on the Canvas site
  • Performing quality assurance on technology (for example, making sure that outside links are working and link to the correct websites)
  • Making sure assignments, quizzes and exams are loaded properly

Brief course description (from the course syllabus):

Why do some firms perform better than other firms? The focus of this course is to answer this question by developing concepts and frameworks to analyze complex business problems and identify how to best create a sustainable competitive advantage. The perspective adopted is that of the general manager who has overall responsibility for the performance of a firm or a business unit within the firm. To execute those responsibilities successfully, the manager needs to understand the basis for the current performance of the firm and to identify those changes (inside or outside the firm) that are most likely to affect future performance adversely or that provide opportunities for the firm to improve its performance. The manager must then use the firm's resources and capabilities to formulate and implement strategies to compete successfully in its new environment. The strategy must define the scope of the firm's activities, the logic through which the activities result in better performance, and what it is about the firm that allows it to better carry out those activities than its competitors. To capture the pragmatic, action-oriented nature of the general manager's job and the complexity of the general manager's milieu, this course is taught through the case method. We will supplement synchronous case discussions with asynchronous readings, lectures, and conceptual analyses. A central goal is for you to develop your own personal synthesis and approach for identifying and solving the key strategic problems facing a business. The course will also help you see relationships between the various functional area courses you will take during your MBA program

Responsibilities*

  • Primary on demand contact for questions from students; provide one-on-one explanations of asynchronous course content and concepts via email, phone, or other remote methods.
  • Objective grading of assignments and exams.

    • Graduate degree or graduate coursework in business or business-related field
    • Excellent interpersonal, organizational and multi-tasking skills
    • Exceptional attention to detail and a personal commitment to high quality work
    • Strong communication skills and ability to develop rapport with a diverse student population
    • Ability to work independently, with minimal supervision, and regularly exercise judgement in setting priorities
