Full Job Description
The Health Information Management Specialist ensures the effective management and use of health information for patient care, records requests, and other document policies and procedures. The Specialist’s role is to maintain the confidentiality of patients’ records by following federal and state regulations regarding the disclosure of protected health information.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Records completion, transcription coordination, document imaging, release of information, and/or providing services and information to physicians and staff.
- Prepares and processes requests for copies of health records or other documents from patients, insurance companies, and other authorized parties involved ensuring that all releases are compliant with HIPPA guidelines, including requests submitted electronically, on paper, or received in person.
- Ensures completion of all forms in a timely manner, obtains appropriate signatures from authorized parties. Documents in the patient’s record the release of information, privacy policy and/or assignment of benefits, maintains patient records per departmental policy.
- Assigns incoming documents, including electronically interfaced or paper versions, according to the workflow.
- Provides patient services and assistance related to HIMS departmental functions to patients, vendors, providers, ancillary staff, and other departments in person, over the telephone, through email, or by other means.
- Completes all document management activity.
- Performs the document imaging function as required, including scanning, quality control, and validation, to ensure scanned images are uploaded into the correct electronic health record visit and meet minimum productivity standards as defined.
- Requires travel to multiple Mountain Park Health Center facilities.
- Maintains regular and predictable attendance.
- Performs other duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Requirements
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
- Must have a valid driver’s license.
Preferred Requirements
- One (1) year of electronic health record (EHR) experience required and basic understanding of medical terminology.
