Role Overview:

The incumbent will patrol and respond to freeway incidents that disrupt the flow of traffic and render first aid often as a first, first responder on a scene. The incumbent will also endeavor to detect incidents, verify conditions, and set up traffic control as needed to mitigate flow restricting incidents. The position will also work to insure traffic flow in peak hours, inclement weather, and during special events. The highest priority for this position will be the recovery of restrict travel lanes and shoulders that affect traffic flow. This recovery will reduce secondary crashes, reduce motorist delay, reduce emissions and improve the mobility of freight. The position will assist disabled motorists by diagnosing minor mechanical problems; provide gasoline; change flat tires; and jump start stalled vehicles. Other duties include, pushing stalled vehicles to highway shoulder or exit ramp, report and tag abandoned vehicles for tow by the Indiana State Police. The position provides fundamental first aid to injured motorists as needed. Granting approval to fill this vacant position will provide the needed coverage to aid the response time to lane restricting events, improve recovery time, reduce delays and reduce secondary crashes. The Hoosier Helper Program is a capacity restoring Traffic Management function considered to have a high ROI compared to the cost of building and maintaining additional pavement.

Salary:

This position traditionally starts at an annual salary of $42,900.00. Salary for this position may be commensurate with education and job experience.

CDL Positions:

Candidates with a current CDL will earn an additional $1 per hour for this position. Candidates without a CDL will be given 90 days to obtain their CDL, with training provided by INDOT, and will then earn an additional $1 per hour upon successfully obtaining their CDL.

This position is located in INDOT's Indianapolis area, Central office.

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows:

  • Patrolfor, and respondsto, freeway incidents that disrupt the normal flow of traffic, setsup traffic control for incidents,anddetectsand verifiesincidentsand traffic problems caused by special events.
  • Serveas a liaison to the Supervisor by identifying freeway operational deficiencies and advising of potential solutions.
  • Observetraffic conditions and reportstoSupervisor anytraffic operation problems, deficiencies in work zone traffic control setup by other agencies, unauthorized lane closures or work, and/or unusual traffic delays.
  • Monitorin-vehicle video equipment to locate incidentsand monitorsCB radio to gather information about disturbances in traffic flow.
  • Removedebris, controlsminor spillsand requestsassistance for complex clean up,and reportsneed for specialized equipment, personnel or materials.
  • Performpre-operation vehicle inspectionsand inventory checks (fluid levels, tire inflation, wash and wax vehicle, replaces depleted tools or supplies on vehicle).
  • Interact with maintenance garage personnel for planned and unplanned maintenance of vehicle.
  • Performgeneral housekeeping duties of Hoosier Helper occupied garage facilities.
  • Performdaily administrativetasks such ascompletion ofincident logs, motorist service logs, time sheets and daily work reports;and,
  • Performotherrelatedduties as assigned.

What You'll Need for Success:

You must meet the following requirements to be considered for employment:

  • High School Diploma or High School Equivalent (HSE) required.
  • Be willing to travel with an appropriate accommodation.
  • Must have valid commercial driver's license (CDL) or ability to obtain within 90 days.
  • Required to submit to and pass a drug test as a condition of employment.
  • Must be able to move weight up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to frequently move self and objects.
  • Must be able to endure exposure to inclement weather.
  • Must have ability to read, write,and communicate effectively.
  • Ability to follow directions and work as part of a team.
  • Effective interpersonal skills.
  • Basic knowledge of automobile mechanical skills.
  • Basic knowledge of first aid.

Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:

This role may be utilized in a supervisory capacity based on agency needs.
