Summary

This position is located in the Manufacturing Department, Production Division of the U.S. Mint, San Francisco, CA. The purpose of this position is to set up, operate and maintain a number of automated machine tools to auto-polish dies in the production of proof coins. This position will also perform laser frosting operations and coating operations and be responsible for performing manual buffer and polisher duties.

Duties

The following are the duties of this position at the WG-10. If you are selected at a lower grade level, you will have the opportunity to learn to perform all these duties and will receive training to help you grow in this position.

As a Die Finishing Specialist, you will:

  • Be responsible for performing automated and manual die finishing work for the production of proof coins.
  • Perform all set up programming operations using control panels on computer controlled automated polishers.
  • Make necessary adjustments to set up equipment. Perform equipment pre-inspections that verify proper operational parameters to ensure optimal performance for automated processes.
  • Uses laser engraving frosting operations and visually inspect, analyze, evaluate, examine and interpret die conditions and dimensions that require in-depth examinations and the application of required specifications to determine acceptability and ensure that images (i.e., letters, numbers and artistic features) are not damaged and conform to mandatory, standard, specifications.
  • Perform basic buffer and polisher duties and responsibilities and finish metal surfaces by manually buffing, polishing, deburring, burnishing, filing, grinding and tumbling and using hand tools or powered equipment. Perform buffer polisher duties and responsibilities.

  • Shift Work: This facility operates on a 24 hour per day, three-shift basis, 5 days a week. Work schedules may vary and assignment to a specific shift cannot be guaranteed. The successful applicant must be available to work on all three shifts on a rotational basis.
  • May be required to wear safety clothing and/or equipment required by the position. This may include safety shoes, hard hats, hearing protection, gloves, masks, etc.
  • Pass a pre-employment physical examination.

Your rating may be lowered if your responses to the online questions are not supported by the education and/or experience described in your application.
