Position Summary

We seek a Data Scientist to work closely with our Director of Applied AI to develop and implement advanced data analytics and machine learning solutions to support the firm's strategic goals. This includes designing, training, evaluating, and deploying machine learning models, including neural networks and generative AI. The person in this role will report to the Director of Applied AI and collaborate closely with colleagues within our Innovation organization, as well as legal professionals, engineers, and other stakeholders across the firm to deeply understand user needs, define data requirements, and assist in the implementation of data-driven projects.

This role requires a unique combination of technical expertise, analytical skills, and the ability to bridge the gap between data science innovation and legal practice. The ideal candidate will thrive in a fast-paced, collaborative environment and be driven to unlock the transformative potential of data science in the legal sector.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist in defining the vision, strategy, and roadmap for data science enabled offerings aligned with the firm's strategy in collaboration with the Director of Applied AI.
  • Gather and prioritize data requirements from attorneys, professional staff, clients, and other stakeholders through interviews, workshops, and data analysis.
  • Coordinate with third-party solution providers and other Innovation team members to translate requirements into technically feasible and user-friendly solutions.
  • Support the full data science project lifecycle, including scoping, prioritizing features, coordinating resources, and assisting with quality assurance.
  • Design, train, evaluate, and deploy machine learning models, including neural networks and generative AI, to solve complex business problems and enhance our generative AI-enabled offerings.
  • Stay up-to-date with the latest advancements in data science, legal tech trends, and evolving regulatory landscapes.
  • Handle data visualization tasks to present insights effectively to stakeholders
  • Construct effective data visualizations that communicate findings clearly and accurately..
  • Apply essential statistics concepts that underpin data science methodologies and analyses.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

Education: Bachelor's degree in a relevant field such as Computer Science, Data Science, Statistics, or a related field; advanced degree preferred

Experience: At least three years in data science with meaningful experience in a professional services environment, preferably in legal tech, legal services, or consulting. Business training or experience in the areas of strategy and operations would be a plus. Proven track record of contributing to successful data science projects from concept to implementation in a business-to-business enterprise environment. Experience designing, training and evaluating machine learning models, including neural networks and generative AI.

Skills:

  • Strong technical background with the ability to understand and communicate complex data science concepts
  • Proficiency in Python, R, SQL and machine learning frameworks such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, or similar
  • Experience in designing, training, and evaluating neural networks including, in particular, experience with tools and methods for evaluating the output of generative AI models, ensuring their quality, relevance and accuracy
  • Proficiency in tools like Tableau, Power BI, D3, or similar
  • A strong understanding of visualization principles and the ability to design effective and insightful data visualizations that communicate findings clearly and accurately
  • Solid grasp of essential statistics concepts and their application in data science
  • Understanding of ethical considerations related to data science
  • Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and strategic thinking abilities
  • Skilled at understanding strategic goals and helping ensure projects remain focused on the strategic vision in an environment of competing priorities
  • Ability to collaborate effectively within a team environment and provide assistance to others as required
  • Passion for driving innovation and leveraging cutting-edge technology to solve complex challenges
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, collaborative environment

Equipment To Be Used: Personal computer and other office equipment such as telephone, calculator, fax, machine, copier, scanner, etc.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Must be able to travel for meetings and training as required
  • Ability to utilize technology including computers and telecommunication devices
  • Ability to work long days as required
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and diverse work problems on a daily basis and complete assignments within set timelines
  • Ability to use independent judgment and discretion and adapt to changing work situations
  • Must have keen problem-solving and troubleshooting abilities and solutions-oriented thinking
  • Ability to read and interpret written documents, computer screens, and other visual displays accurately
  • Ability to hear and understand verbal communication, including conversations and instructions, is important for effective collaboration and communication
  • Must have flexibility and adaptability to navigate changes, unexpected challenges, and evolving priorities

Working Conditions: You will be required to work in the office at minimum 3 days per week. Occasionally called upon to work hours in excess of your normal daily schedule. The details of your weekly schedule will be discussed further with your direct supervisor.

Pay Ranges: This represents the presently-anticipated low and high end of Reed Smith's pay range for this position. Actual pay may vary based on various factors, including but not limited to location and experience.

  • Pittsburgh / Miami / Houston / Dallas - $96,000 - 120,000
  • Philadelphia / Chicago - $103,000 - $129,000
  • Princeton / Washington, D.C. - $110,000 - $138,000
  • New York - $115,000 - $143,000
