Full Job Description

Apply for this Auditor (Student Trainee) position with the Office of Trade, Trade Regulatory Audit, (TRA) at U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and enjoy the opportunity to explore a federal career in the Pathways Program and get paid for the work performed while still in school. Students who successfully complete the program may be eligible for conversion to a permanent position in the civil service. If converted, this position will likely fill an entry level Auditor position.

***Eligibility: This position is open to students who have been accepted for enrollment or are currently enrolled in an accredited educational institution or certification program on at least a halftime basis. At a minimum you must have completed one academic year of post high school study to qualify.

 

Typical job duties include:

  • Applying conventional audit techniques under the guidance of a supervisory auditor or higher-level auditor in charge to complete fundamental and relatively uncomplicated audits or portions of more complicated audits.
  • Serving as a student trainee/trainee, assigned to senior managers and auditors in charge, in the performance of auditing and accounting function.
  • Performing a variety of assigned tasks designed to provide on-the-job training and experience in auditing Importers and other trade related entities through the practical application of generally accepted government auditing standards and TRA policy and procedures.
  • Preparing automated audit documentation in the form of documents, spreadsheets, pivot tables, charts, etc., to provide sufficient and appropriate evidence to support audit findings.

 

Salary and Benefits:

This is a part-time position with part-time schedules typically being 16 to 32 hours per administrative workweek, prearranged on a scheduled tour of duty. This position starts at a full-time salary of $31,512 (GS-3, Step 1) to $45,982 (GS-4, Step 10) which will be adjusted for the part-time hours scheduled. 

 

Qualifications:

You must be a student who has been accepted for enrollment or who is currently enrolled and seeking a degree, diploma or certificate in a qualifying educational institution on a full or half-time basis (half-time is defined by the educational institution in which the student is enrolled).

Depending upon your level of education you completed you will be appointed at either of the following grade levels:

GS-3 grade level: Completion of one (1) academic year of post-high school study. One (1) year of full-time academic study is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university, or at least 20 hours of classroom instruction per week for approximately 36 weeks in a business, secretarial, or technical school.

GS-4 grade level: Completed two (2) full academic years of post-high school study or an associate's degree. Two (2) years of full-time academic study is defined as 60 semester hours, 90 quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university.
