The Department of Performing Arts invites applications for a one-year full-time Artist-in-Residence position in Scene Study/Acting. The Department seeks candidates who can contribute to the excellence and diversity of our academic community through ongoing engagement with students both inside and outside of the classroom. Ideal candidates will have an active career in the profession, significant experience teaching acting, and the capacity for university service. This 9-month appointment begins January 1, 2025, and spans the (two semester) time frame of Spring 2025 and Fall 2025.

Primary Duties, Responsibilities, and Tasks:

Primary responsibilities for this position include teaching Scene Study and Advanced Acting (special topics) courses to our BFA Theatre and Performance and BFA Acting students. Our ideal candidate is Stanislavsky driven and informed, but with an anti-racist and inclusive lens. Candidates whose approaches include other traditions or methods are also encouraged to apply. This position carries a 3/3 course load.

The candidate should have facility with culturally responsive acting pedagogies and approaches and possess a fluid overall pedagogy that is able to adapt and expand as the cultural conversation around representation, privilege-based difference, and inclusive excellence continues to evolve. Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will have an MFA degree in Acting or professional credits equivalent to an MFA, as well as previous experience teaching acting within a diverse learning community on the college level or in a professional studio setting.

Emerson College enrolls nearly 5,300 graduate and undergraduate students from 49 states and more than 70 countries. Its main campus is located in the dynamic, multicultural city of Boston. The college also has campuses in Los Angeles and the Netherlands. Emerson's commitment to inclusive excellence is supported by a range of resources such as the Office of Internationalization & Equity, the Social Justice Collaborative, and the Center for Innovation in Teaching and Learning.

The Department of Performing Arts is home to one of the nation’s leading programs in theatrical performance, design, stage management, and theatre education. With a team of 90 full and part-time faculty and theatre staff members, the department enrolls 530 students in nine distinct undergraduate programs and one graduate program. The department offers BFA degrees in Theatre, Theatre Education, Theatre Design Technology, Stage & Production Management, Musical Theatre, Acting, Theatre & Performance, and Theatre Education & Performance; general education courses in theatre studies; and an MA/MFA degree in Theatre Education and Applied Theatre. Emerson Stage, the production organization within the department, produces eight to ten fully staged major productions annually in five theatres, with additional production opportunities available to our students through curricular projects, student theatre organizations and ArtsEmerson— the College’s professional presenting company.
