Job Summary

The Frances Willson Thompson Library and Genesee Historical Collections Center seeks an Archives Assistant Intermediate to join a student-centered team of library and archives faculty, staff, and students seeking to foster learning and academic achievement. This individual will serve students, faculty, staff, and community members in the archives, including supporting public open hours, assisting researchers, and processing archival materials. Overall, they must be able to work successfully with faculty, staff, students, and all who work in and use the library and archives spaces.

This position will report to the Office Manager.

This position is term limited for one-year with the option to extend.

Responsibilities*

  • Open and close the archives for public hours
  • Engage with colleagues at area history organizations
  • Address researcher queries in-person, online, and by email and refer researchers to local public resources or to library circulation when appropriate
  • Perform scanning and digitization work
  • Process, research, analyze, describe, and update collections using ArchivesSpace
  • Engage in daily archival upkeep tasks, including shelving, relocating, organizing, and filing materials
  • Attend Thompson Library and Archives employee meetings
  • Complete appropriate special assignments and projects as assigned
  • Other appropriate duties as assigned

Required Qualifications*

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • One or more years of experience working in a library or archives
  • Experience with standard office applications and equipment
  • Must be able to perform all physical aspects of the job with or without reasonable accommodations --- Able to lift or move items 25-50 pounds, push a cart, and lift items on and off shelves

Modes of Work

Onsite

The work requires, or the supervisor approves a fully onsite presence. Onsite is defined as a designated U-M owned or leased work location within or outside of the State of Michigan.
