A Brief Overview
This role is an independent researcher that plans, coordinates and executes research projects.

Works with the principal, investigator. Participates in and assists in the planning and coordination of research projects. Is independent and responsible for a specific aspect of one or more research project. Assists in determining the direction of the project.

About the Laboratory

The Chan Lab at the University of Pennsylvania's Perelman School of Medicine and Children's Hospital of Philadelphia is seeking a highly motivated and innovative data scientist/research associate to support the lab's data analysis, management, manuscript writing, and grant submissions. Our lab's portfolio includes a broad range of initiatives, such as multi-country clinical trials, epidemiologic cohort studies, and innovations in technology and data science dedicated to advancing the survival and health of mothers, newborns, and children worldwide.

Job Summary:

The Scientist will perform complex data analysis and predictive modeling using machine learning, statistical, and mathematical techniques incorporating heterogeneous and complex data types. The Scientist will be responsible for the management of large databases as well as for the development, maintenance, and documentation of code. They will oversee data collection and data extraction and independently carry out data management, visualization, wrangling, and analysis tasks. The Scientist will assist the Principal Investigator and lab with collaborative data projects, providing organization of tasks and workflows for programmatic needs, troubleshooting issues, and identifying solutions.

What you will do

  • Assists faculty in the conduct of research of significant value in the basic and/or translational science area
  • Plans, conducts research projects within the federal, institutional regulations and policies
  • Collaborates with researchers, external agencies and institutions to develop cooperative research initiatives
  • Trains technical staff, students in lab procedures
  • Reviews manuscripts for peer-reviewed journals
  • Assists with the submission of grant applications, contracts and research projects funding
  • Participates in free discussion, research progress, and overall morale
  • Responsible for appropriate use of research funds
  • May supervise students or other research staff as assigned

Education Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree Required
  • Master's Degree Preferred
  • Doctorate Preferred

Experience Qualifications

  • At least seven (7) years of directly relevant post grad scientific lab experience Required
  • At least nine (9) years of directly relevant post grad scientific lab experience Preferred
  • Successful completion of a Post Doc Fellowship Preferred
