Job Description:
Berklee College of Music invites applications for a full-time faculty position in the Composition Department. The Composition Department is looking for an experienced conductor of musical theater who is committed to excellence in teaching, has a demonstrated record of national or international musical engagement with musical theater and classical or contemporary music, and enjoys working in a campus climate that promotes cultural diversity and multicultural understanding.
Under the supervision of and reporting to the Chair of Composition Department, this full-time faculty member's primary duties include teaching core conducting classes Conducting 1 & 2, introductory and advanced courses in musical theater direction, individual lessons in conducting, and other courses in the areas of the candidate’s specialization. Service to the College includes academic advising, faculty meetings, office hours, developing the Theater Music Direction Conducting Minor program, and other duties as assigned. This is a 9-month full-time faculty position with renewable multi-year contract; initial appointment to begin September 1, 2025. Rank and compensation are commensurate with professional experience.
Qualifications
Strong professional experience and active profile as music director in musical theater and related skills, with a preference for experience on Broadway and with current technology
Secondary experience as a professional conductor of symphonic orchestra repertoire preferred, or additional experience in other related fields such as theory, arranging, or orchestration
Innovative ideas about teaching core and advanced conducting classes
Excellent communication and collaborative skills
Experience and willingness to work within a diverse faculty and student body
Master’s Degree or equivalent professional experience
Classroom teaching experience in higher education preferred

The Composition Department teaches to excellence, preparing composition majors and conducting minors for a professional career, and educating all college students in core harmony, counterpoint and conducting classes. We offer four conducting minor tracks, in Contemporary (Orchestral), Musical Theater Direction, Choir and Music Education.
The Conducting Minor in Music Theater Direction is a comprehensive and innovative curriculum that trains students in the tools and skills of Broadway musical direction, including specialized conducting techniques, music department management, the nature of collaboration and working with singing actors. The Conducting 1&2 core classes teach fundamental and intermediate conducting skills, alongside leadership and rehearsal techniques, through symphony orchestra repertoire to all Berklee College students.
